Indigenous People of French Guiana

Indigenous Peoples of French Guiana

The Indigenous population of French Guiana consists of six tribes. Although the government refuses consensus of them out of respect for their sovereignty it is estimated that the total population is in the realms of 19,000. Together all of the tribes form a single socially and politically recognized organization, the Federation of Indigenous Organizations of French Guiana (FOAG). Socially the native peoples have a recognized independence and freedom. A call for recognition of  territorial rights and a ploy to continue their traditional activities is an ongoing ploy of native peoples. Recently they have joined with "The Maroons", decedents of the black slaves whom have become displaced throughout the past century.

  1. Even though I am hesitant of The Maroons after hearing your presentation, I still have to tip my hat to the government for respecting their sovereignty.
